The Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Mr. Christopher Maikalangu, has announced the immediate cancellation of radio and television taxes previously imposed on residential homes within the council.
The decision followed widespread public criticism and complaints from residents who described the policy as unfair and burdensome.
Mr. Kingsley Madaki, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs to the Chairman, disclosed the development to journalists on Friday in Abuja. He said the council’s decision reflects its commitment to responsive governance and citizen engagement.
Speaking during a meeting at the AMAC headquarters, Mr. Maikalangu said his administration remains dedicated to policies that prioritize the welfare of residents while ensuring transparency and fairness in revenue generation.
“The original purpose of the radio and television taxes was to fund developmental projects and improve service delivery,” Maikalangu explained. “However, after listening to the concerns of residents, we realized the need for broader consultation and better communication before implementation.”

He therefore directed the council’s revenue department to halt all collections immediately and withdraw any tax notices already sent to households.
Going forward, the AMAC boss said the council would restrict such levies to commercial establishments such as hotels, restaurants, and entertainment centres, where the tax can be justified by the services these businesses enjoy from the council.
Mr. Maikalangu also urged residents to continue voicing their opinions on government policies, assuring them that public feedback would always guide the council’s decisions. He promised that detailed information on the new tax policy would be released through the AMAC website, social media platforms, and town hall meetings to keep residents fully informed.
He thanked residents for their cooperation and constructive criticism, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fairness, accountability, and sustainable urban development.
