Super Falcons forward Ifeoma Onumonu, has announced her retirement from professional football after more than 20 years at the top level few months after President Bola Tinubu rewarded the Super Falcons for securing victory at the 2025 WAFCON championship.
The 31-year-old made the announcement on her social media accounts on Saturday, expressing her appreciation to fans, teammates, and coaches for their steadfast support throughout her career.
“With a heart full of gratitude, I say goodbye to my playing career. While my time as a player has concluded, my passion and commitment to this game will remain strong,” she stated.

Onumonu began her football journey at the age of eight with The Magic, a local youth team in the United States.
Throughout her club career, she played for prominent American teams, including Portland Thorns, Boston Breakers, Reign FC, and NJ/NY Gotham FC, where she won the NWSL Championship.
On the international stage, Onumonu represented Nigeria at the Olympics and the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and she played a crucial role in the Super Falcons’ historic 10th Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) victory.
Reflecting on her career, she remarked: “I had the honor of lifting an NWSL championship trophy, representing Nigeria at the Olympics and World Cup, and contributing to our 10th African Cup of Nations win.”
Although she is stepping away from active play, Onumonu reassured fans that her journey in football is not over, hinting at potential future roles within the sport.
