In a bid to ease the impact of the ongoing food crisis in Nigeria, over 5,000 vulnerable individuals from 76 villages in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, have benefited from free food distribution. This initiative, spearheaded by the State Governor Pastor Umo Eno, is part of the state’s effort to provide relief during these challenging economic times.

Held at the Etim Ekpo Local Government Council Headquarters in Utu, the food distribution event was coordinated by the Akwa Ibom State Bulk Purchase Agency. The exercise provided essential food items such as rice, beans, and garri to residents from 11 wards and 111 units, ensuring that relief reaches the most vulnerable members of the community.

Dr. Dan Akpan, Chairman of the Bulk Purchase Agency, emphasized that the relief initiative aligns with Governor Umo Eno’s promise to alleviate hardship for struggling families, regardless of political affiliations.

“This program is for everyone in need,” Akpan stated, highlighting that the food security initiative was created to combat the economic hardship faced by many across the state. He also explained that only individuals listed in the World Bank-accredited social register are eligible for the aid.

Mr. Ekpuk Eshiet, Transition Chairman of Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, praised Governor Eno’s leadership, describing it as both sensitive and responsive to the needs of the people. Eshiet confirmed that 5,000 vulnerable residents would receive the much-needed food supplies.

“Our people are peaceful, and we are happy to have a governor who is genuinely concerned about our welfare,” he said.

Professor Imo Moffat, Commissioner for Science and Digital Economy, urged the beneficiaries to embrace the state’s “Back to Farm” initiative, stressing that the government’s capacity to continuously provide for all citizens is limited.

Nseobong Samuel and Madam Patience Micah, two of the beneficiaries, expressed their appreciation for Governor Eno’s compassion and efforts to support those in need. Comrade Saviour Godwin, Youth President of Otu Ikot Onko, also lauded the governor’s leadership, particularly his commitment to healthcare and food provision.

“Governor Umo Eno is doing well. He feeds the poor and needy in our community. God will bless him,” Godwin remarked.

This food relief initiative marks another significant step in the Akwa Ibom State government’s ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity and support vulnerable communities during Nigeria’s current economic difficulties.
