Electricity consumers in seven northern states are set to experience weeks of scheduled power outages as the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) undertakes a major upgrade of the Jos–Gombe transmission line.
The affected states—Plateau State, Gombe State, Bauchi State, Borno State, Adamawa State, Taraba State, and Yobe State—will see outages scheduled from April 9 to May 22, 2026.
According to NISO, the outages will occur weekly from Thursday to Sunday, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., to allow installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre optic infrastructure along the Jos–Gombe 330kV corridor. The upgrade aims to enhance real-time monitoring, fault detection, load balancing, and overall electricity distribution efficiency across the network.
While alternative 132kV lines will partially maintain supply, officials warned that reduced electricity access is likely during the outage periods due to limited network capacity.

The project is part of broader reforms to modernise Nigeria’s power grid, including improvements to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and Energy Management Systems. Authorities emphasised that these temporary disruptions will result in long-term benefits, such as improved grid stability, faster fault response, and better coordination across the national network.
NISO confirmed collaboration with distribution companies and the Transmission Company of Nigeria to minimise disruption, while urging residents to cooperate during the upgrade process.
