Sixty-eight inmates in Kano State have successfully passed the 2025 National Examination Council (NECO) examinations, marking a significant milestone in the state’s correctional education efforts.
According to a statement by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command, Musbahu Lawan, the inmates were fully sponsored by the Kano State government under the Centre for Inmates’ Continuity Education, which aims to rehabilitate inmates through education.
He explained that the success reflects the broader goals of the Correctional Service Act, 2019, which promotes the reformation and reintegration of inmates through academic and vocational training.
He quoted the Controller of the state command, Ado Inuwa, as having praised the inmates for their dedication, describing the results as a “remarkable achievement” that proves the power of second chances.

“The initiative is in line with the national directive from the Controller General of Corrections, Silvester Nwakuche, who has urged correctional facilities across Nigeria to enroll inmates in educational and skills-based programmes to aid their reintegration into society.
Chairperson of the Prerogative of Mercy, Hajiya Azumi Bebeje, congratulated the successful candidates and commended Governor Abba Yusuf for his continued support of inmate education.
She emphasized that the governor’s commitment is a reflection of his compassion and belief in human transformation.
Many of the inmates described their success as a “turning point” in their lives, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to pursue education despite their circumstances.
