Authorities have arrested 60 individuals in Damaturu, Yobe State. The operation, which included local community members and officials from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), resulted in the capture of 30 men and 30 women.
According to Mr. Saidu Jakusko, the official responsible for fighting drug abuse in the state, this action was prompted by a worrying increase in drug use, particularly among young people. He stated that the first phase of this operation focused on key areas in the state capital and will continue until the issue is under control.
During the arrests, many suspects were found to be under the influence of drugs. Among those detained were three well-known drug dealers previously monitored by law enforcement. The authorities are now reviewing the cases of the arrested individuals. Those who are not originally from Yobe will be sent back to their home states, while local residents will receive support, counseling, and, where necessary, legal action depending on their involvement.
Jakusko mentioned that female suspects would be given special consideration during this process. He expressed gratitude to Governor Mai Mala Buni for his support and acknowledged the cooperation of security agencies in carrying out this operation. He also emphasized the importance of ongoing partnerships to combat the drug problem.
Sheikh Abubakar Muhammad, who was invited to provide guidance to the suspects based on Islamic teachings, urged them to respect God and live responsible lives. He pointed out that many of those arrested were young and should be contributing positively to society. He encouraged parents to play an active role in guiding their children’s morals.
