The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, also left eight others hospitalised in various medical facilities across the area, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Confirming the development on Wednesday, the Taraba State Police Command said preliminary investigations suggest that the victims may have unknowingly eaten meat contaminated with a toxic substance believed to have been used for rodent control.

In a statement issued by the acting Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Mshelizah, the command disclosed that officers were immediately deployed to the community upon receiving reports of the incident.

The affected persons were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were evacuated for necessary procedures.

The development has sparked widespread concern among residents, with calls for increased public awareness on the safe handling and storage of poisonous substances to prevent similar occurrences.

Police authorities said a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the suspected poisoning and to ascertain whether foul play was involved.

The command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious food items, sudden illnesses, or related incidents to security agencies to forestall further tragedy.

Reassuring residents, the police pledged to uncover the truth behind the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
