Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) strongest chance at reclaiming the presidency in 2027, calling on the opposition party to make a deliberate push to bring him back into its fold.
Speaking during Friday’s edition of Politics Today on Channels Television, Lamido described Jonathan as “the best bet” for the PDP, insisting that his experience, governance track record, and collaborative leadership style make him unmatched among current party members from the South.
“I think for PDP now, they should try and woo him; he is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him,” Lamido said. “He has led the country before, he understands governance, he works well with others. I don’t see a better alternative than Jonathan if he comes to the PDP.”
The PDP chieftain argued that if the party is to zone the presidency to the South, Jonathan’s profile stands head and shoulders above other contenders within the party. He described the former president as “competent, very qualified, willing to listen, and a key player who believes in partnership.”

Lamido’s endorsement comes amid persistent speculation that Jonathan may stage a political comeback, despite official PDP denials that he is being wooed. Political insiders suggest that quiet lobbying is ongoing within the party to convince him to run, with strategists seeing him as a formidable challenger to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Jonathan, who lost his re-election bid in 2015, has kept a relatively low political profile in recent years. However, mounting reports of behind-the-scenes negotiations and the ex-president’s enduring political influence have made him one of the most closely watched figures ahead of the 2027 polls.
If Jonathan returns to the PDP and secures the party’s ticket, the 2027 presidential race could become one of the most fiercely contested in Nigeria’s recent political history, potentially setting up a high-stakes rematch between two political heavyweights.
