2027: Ohanaeze backs ADC coalition, says move halts Nigeria’s slide toward one-party state

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has thrown its weight behind the Opposition Coalition’s adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring it a major step in halting Nigeria’s dangerous drift toward a one-party system.

In a statement issued on Friday by its factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Chief Thompson Ohia, Ohanaeze described the development as a strategic milestone that could recalibrate Nigeria’s political trajectory. The group asserted that the coalition’s embrace of the ADC has disrupted the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and rendered “crisis merchants”, alleged saboteurs of opposition parties like the PDP, LP, SDP, and APGA, politically irrelevant.

Ohanaeze noted that the current political climate demands urgent intervention as Nigeria faces a convergence of economic collapse, worsening insecurity, inflation, and rising hunger. The group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to abandon complacency and take bold, redemptive steps to rescue the nation from economic and social freefall.

“The government must awaken from its slumber and urgently confront the economic and security crises plaguing the nation. President Tinubu is now on notice. It’s time for him to critically evaluate whether his administration’s unpopular policies have delivered meaningful progress for the Nigerian people,” the statement read.

The group accused several ministers in Tinubu’s cabinet of failing to deliver on their mandates, especially in vital sectors such as economy, security, agriculture, health, and rural development. As the administration completes its 2 years in office, Ohanaeze urged the President to initiate a comprehensive cabinet reshuffle, replacing political loyalists with proven economists, technocrats, and policy experts who prioritize national interest.

While acknowledging the commendable infrastructure strides led by Ministers David Umahi and Nyesom Wike in the Federal Capital Territory, the group emphasized the urgent need for broader reforms and performance-based governance. Ohanaeze also advised President Tinubu to view the ADC’s growing influence as an opportunity rather than a threat, encouraging him to recalibrate his strategies and reconnect with the frustrations of ordinary Nigerians.

“The time for taking Nigerians for granted is over. Ignoring their pressing needs will only deepen the resentment already festering across the country,” the statement warned.

However, Ohanaeze also cautioned the public not to romanticize the opposition, pointing out that many leaders within the ADC coalition bear responsibility for the nation’s challenges, having previously held power under the APC since 2015. The group claimed that over 80 percent of those steering the ADC’s new momentum are individuals with questionable motives, using the party as a platform for state capture and personal ambition.

According to the group, fresh intelligence suggests that some Northern governors are secretly negotiating with the ADC and may defect before the 2027 elections. The looming threat of betrayal from within the APC, particularly over fears that President Tinubu may replace Vice President Kashim Shettima with another Northern candidate, is reportedly fueling anxiety in the presidency.

Ohanaeze concluded by urging the President to urgently reassess his political strategy, stating that the current trajectory poses serious risks to his re-election ambitions and to national cohesion.

“President Tinubu must confront his administration’s failures with sincerity. There is still time to change course, but the window is rapidly closing.”
