Retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, the former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has officially declared his intention to run for president in the 2027 general elections on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). The declaration, made in Minna, Niger State, marks a high-stakes return to national politics for one of Nigeria’s most controversial and enigmatic figures.
Speaking to members of the SDP state executive and a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, Al-Mustapha voiced deep concern over the state of the nation and pledged to lead with purpose, resilience, and a clear vision for national transformation. He emphasized that his presidential ambition is born out of patriotism and a burning desire to rescue Nigeria from what he described as a state of decay.
“I am heartbroken by the condition of our country. The hardship, insecurity, and disunity are alarming. But I believe that with the right leadership and honest intentions, Nigeria can be repositioned for greatness,” Al-Mustapha said, stressing his readiness to offer bold and strategic leadership in 2027.
Determined to connect directly with the electorate, Al-Mustapha revealed plans to embark on a nationwide tour, aimed at engaging Nigerians across all regions. According to his Director of News Media and ICT, Jubril Umar Sanda, this grassroots engagement is central to Al-Mustapha’s campaign, which is rooted in the values of integrity, courage, and a well-thought-out development blueprint.

While in Minna, the retired major also traveled to Mokwa to sympathize with victims of a devastating flood that displaced over 200 residents and destroyed properties. He used the occasion to reiterate the urgency of decisive governance and disaster preparedness, warning that the continued absence of responsive leadership would only worsen the suffering of Nigerians.
SDP State Chairman, Alhaji Buhari Yakubu Yarima, hailed Al-Mustapha’s declaration as a timely and bold move. He praised the retired military officer’s consistent commitment to national service, saying his entry into the race had boosted the morale of party members and enhanced the SDP’s growing relevance in the country’s political space.
With this declaration, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha joins a growing list of presidential hopefuls as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 elections. His candidacy is expected to stir public debate and possibly reshape the dynamics of the political landscape, especially as citizens search for a credible alternative to lead the country through turbulent times and deliver real solutions.
