Political tensions are rising in Bayelsa State following the decision of former governor and current senator, Seriake Dickson, to join the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a move that could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election.
Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the Senate, announced his defection on Thursday, formally leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform on which he served two terms as governor and later secured election to the National Assembly.
The development marks a dramatic shift for the former governor, long regarded as one of the most loyal defenders of the PDP in the South South region. Until recently, Dickson had strongly resisted calls to abandon the party, even criticizing the defection of his successor, Douye Diri, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Explaining his decision, Dickson painted a bleak picture of the PDP’s future, warning that the party’s deep internal divisions could prevent it from fielding credible candidates in the 2027 elections.
Although details about the structure and leadership of the NDC remain limited, Dickson’s entry into the party is already stirring political debate in Bayelsa. His influence in the state remains significant after eight years in office and a long career in national politics.
Known among supporters by the nickname “Ofurumapepe,” meaning the Great White Shark, Dickson has cultivated a reputation for political resilience and assertiveness. Over the years, he has built a wide network of loyal allies and protégés across Bayelsa.
One of those protégés is Governor Diri, whose own political rise was closely linked to Dickson’s influence during his time as governor. That legacy partly explains why the PDP structure in Bayelsa did not completely collapse when Diri moved to the APC, unlike similar shifts in other states.
With the PDP now weakened by internal disputes and the departure of some of its leading figures in the state, many party loyalists may soon be forced to choose a new political direction. For some, that path may lead to the NDC under Dickson’s leadership, while others could align with the APC camp led by Diri.

The unfolding rivalry between the two former allies is expected to shape Bayelsa’s political environment in the months leading up to the 2027 election. Analysts say the contest could become one of the most closely watched political battles in the Niger Delta.
Bayelsa has rarely been a quiet arena for politics. From the era of former governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha to the present, political competition in the Ijaw-dominated state has often been intense and unpredictable.
With Dickson now charting a new political path through the NDC and Diri firmly aligned with the ruling APC, Bayelsa appears set for another defining chapter in its political history as the countdown to 2027 begins.
