Newly appointed National spokesman of the presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Charles Aniagwu has said that former president, Olusegun Obasanjo will back the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

Aniagwu made the claim while reacting to questions by journalists during a press briefing at Asaba, Delta State, Tuesday.

Several viral videos have revealed Obasanjo’s unhidden rejection of Atiku Abubakar becoming president of Nigeria both in 2023 and at any time.

In one of the viral videos obtained by The Trumpet, Obasanjo was heard saying, “with what I know about Atiku, God will not forgive me if I allow him to become president of this country”.

However, reacting to Obasanjo’s supposed rejection of his then Vice President, Aniagwu pointed out that the former president knows the qualities of Atiku and will support him in the interest of Nigeria and in line with his (Obasanjo) political ideals ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Aniagwu said, “You realize that between 1999 and 2007, Obasanjo was our candidate’s principal, and he made a whole lot of difference in our economy, and thereafter he had a different view may be due to certain infallible and supported someone else. But I would like to refer you to what happened in 2019. Former president Olusegun Obasanjo supported Atiku very well in the last elections, go and check the records. Atiku was more or less Obasanjo’s candidate if you want me to use that word.

“So, if he supported him that much, I don’t think anything has changed between 2019 and now. Secondly, our former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, a man we have much respect for, held a meeting with our former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, and the last military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and thereafter, some newsmen accosted him, and they asked him, and he said, at the moment he has not made up his mind, that at the moment he does not have a candidate. So, I wouldn’t know where he has said he is not supporting Atiku at the open.

Charles Aniagwu

“I am confident that the same God that led him to support Atiku in 2019 is still very much alive and will lead him to know that Atiku has what it takes to rescue our country from where we are now.

“We believe that Obasanjo is a man who means well for our country, he has demonstrated it in so many ways, he saw that ability and capability in Atiku Abubakar, and he chose him against all odds to become his running mate and even after Atiku had won as the governorship candidate of PDP in Adamawa. He did not go for those who contested with him, but he saw a man that is very detribalise and those things he saw are very much around in terms of his characteristics.

“So, we are confident that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, will, in the interest of our country and in line with his political ideals, support Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2023 general elections.”
