Tension has gripped the Nigerian military following reports that two officers linked to a failed coup attempt are on the run after being named among suspects accused of plotting to overthrow the democratic government.
Sources within the military confirmed that security agencies have widened their investigation and continued to make arrests after interrogating 16 officers detained in the first week of October over the alleged plot. Intelligence reports indicate that 18 personnel were originally marked for arrest, but two managed to evade capture and are now believed to have fled the country.
One of the fugitives has been identified as Major J.M. Ganaks, service number N/14363, a native of the Federal Capital Territory. Ganaks, a member of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Regular Course 58, was stationed at Jaji, Kaduna State, before disappearing shortly after the first round of arrests.
Also declared wanted is Captain G. Binuga, service number N/167722, who reportedly abandoned his post and escaped before operatives could apprehend him. Both officers, according to sources, played key roles in coordinating elements allegedly involved in the foiled plot.
Security agencies are said to be working with international partners to track the fleeing officers, as fears mount over possible links between the suspects and external collaborators.
The military high command has remained tight-lipped on the details of the investigation but has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding Nigeria’s democracy and maintaining constitutional order.
Analysts say the development highlights growing unease within the ranks amid the nation’s political and economic tensions. The Defence Headquarters is expected to issue an official statement in the coming days as the hunt for the two missing officers intensifies.
