Kano State has taken a sweeping step to reinforce safety and improve academic strength across its secondary schools with the deployment of 1,600 newly recruited watchmen and the formal engagement of 400 Mathematics teachers on permanent and pensionable terms. The move signals a coordinated effort by the Abba Yusuf administration to stabilise learning environments and rebuild confidence in public schools.
The governor unveiled the appointments at a ceremony in Kano, where he explained that the watchmen are being placed at strategic points across the state to restore order, protect school facilities and curb the rise in vandalism. He noted that meaningful teaching cannot take place in an atmosphere unsettled by security lapses, adding that the new recruits will monitor movements around school grounds and support day-to-day operations.
He urged the watchmen to carry out their duties with diligence and a firm sense of responsibility, stressing that their presence is expected to improve discipline and reduce disruptions that often hamper effective learning.

Alongside the security deployment, the governor confirmed the recruitment of 400 Mathematics teachers to close long-standing subject gaps and strengthen the state’s foundation in science and technology. He described Mathematics as a core pillar for engineering, innovation and modern industry, and said Kano must build a workforce capable of competing in an increasingly knowledge-based global environment.
The administration expects the new teachers to lift classroom standards, improve examination performance and guide students toward STEM-related opportunities. The governor praised the Ministry of Education and the Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board for what he called a fair and credible recruitment exercise.
He reaffirmed that his government will continue to place security and quality of instruction at the forefront of its reforms as it works to reposition public schools for better results.
