10,000 athletes set to lock horns as Public Service Games kick off in Port Harcourt

Sports lovers within Rivers State and beyond will be treated to 11 days of sporting activities as the 43rd Public Service Games begins today, November 24, 2024, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The tournament tagged: “Simplified Rivers Games 2024” is expected to kick off at different sporting centers today and end on December 5, 2024.

Already, the King Alfred Diette Spiff Sports Complex, where most of the sports activities will take place is wearing a new look as the Local Organizing Committee, headed by the Rivers State Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Tammy Danagogo, has done everything possible to bring the facilities up to standard.

At a pre- event press conference by the LOC Chairman, Danagogo said the event will be one of the biggest sporting events in Port Harcourt with 10,000 athletes, drawn from the 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory featuring at the games.

Danagogo said that the sports festival will have multiple economic benefits, not only for the host Rivers State, but for all the participating 36 states of the federation, including the FCT.

He expressed his deep appreciation to the President of the Public Service Games, Mr. Aloku Amaebi and others, for choosing Rivers State to host the 43rd edition of the annual Public Service Games, 2024.

He recalled that similar games was held 17 years ago in Rivers State, during the tenure of former Governor, Peter Odili, assuring that the state is ready once again to host the whole country 17 years after.

“By the grace of God, we are ready to get every necessary facilities ready, to ensure that we organize and host a very simplified and superlative games in Rivers State,” Danagogo added.

The state Head of Service and co – Chairman of the Local Planning Committee, Dr. George Nwaeke, said that the games will create awareness and stability among public servants, create networking opportunities among participants and promote a healthy living style for participants.

As at the time of filing this report, athletes from different states have started arriving the state and checking into their hotels ahead of the commencement of proper sporting activities from November 25, 2024.
