Aston Villa’s Premier League title challenge suffered another setback on Sunday as they were beaten 1-0 at home by 10-man Brentford, despite new signing Tammy Abraham having a goal ruled out.

Brentford were reduced to 10 players in the 42nd minute when Kevin Schade was shown a straight red card for a foul on Matty Cash.

However, the visitors struck in first-half stoppage time as Dango Outtara fired home after latching onto a rebound.

Abraham, who rejoined Villa in January, saw an equaliser disallowed early in the second half following a VAR review that ruled the ball had gone out of play in the build-up.

Villa, who missed several chances, remain third on 46 points, seven behind leaders Arsenal.

Brentford’s resilient display lifts them to seventh on 36 points, with goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher instrumental in securing the victory.
