The Lagos State Government has released ₦40 million to families of deceased LASTMA officials as financial support for their families and dependents.

The disbursement was announced in a statement shared on the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official X handle on Thursday. The presentation, coordinated by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, took place at the agency’s headquarters in Oshodi.

According to the statement, the intervention underscores the state government’s compassion and institutional commitment to honouring LASTMA officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

A total of 20 families benefited from the exercise, with each receiving ₦2 million as a show of solidarity and support from the state government.

Speaking at the event, Giwa stressed that the assistance should not be regarded as compensation, noting that no amount of money can equate to the value of human life.

He explained that the gesture represents a symbolic recognition of the courage, dedication and ultimate sacrifice of the fallen officers in service to Lagos State.

“The Lagos State Government remains committed to preserving the memory of these brave men and women. This intervention affirms that their sacrifices will never be forgotten and that their families will not be left to bear the burden of loss alone,” Giwa said.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr Olawale Musa, commended the government for prioritising empathy and human-centred governance.

He noted that such initiatives help strengthen public confidence in government institutions while reassuring serving officers that dedication and sacrifice will always be acknowledged.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, in his welcome address, described the deceased officers as devoted patriots whose legacy of discipline, service and selflessness would endure within the agency.

He expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for sustaining a governance culture that places a premium on human dignity and the welfare of public servants.

The statement further noted that Mrs Adebayo Adegboayega Coker, wife of LASTMA’s pioneer General Manager, encouraged the bereaved families to use the funds judiciously, particularly for the education and welfare of their children.

In a vote of thanks, Mrs Adeyemo Rotimi, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu for his compassion and continued support, describing the gesture as reassuring and deeply meaningful to the affected families.
