The Federal Government has officially approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to ₦77,000. This hike, which takes effect from July 2024, comes in response to the recently enacted National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Caroline Embu, spokesperson for the NYSC, confirmed the allowance increment, quoting a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta, on September 25, 2024.

The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had previously met with the Commission’s Chairman, advocating for improved welfare for Corps Members. “The NYSC Boss is grateful to the Federal Government for this timely decision, which will provide relief to Corps Members and further motivate them in their service to the nation,” said Embu.

Prior to this adjustment, Corps Members were receiving ₦33,000 per month, following a 2020 increase from ₦19,800 after the minimum wage was set at ₦30,000. The new increase more than doubles their previous earnings, aligning with the recent minimum wage hike to ₦70,000.

The increase in NYSC allowances follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the National Minimum Wage Act in July 2024. The act, which raised the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, came after months of negotiations between the government, labor unions, and the private sector.

This allowance increase will significantly improve the financial stability of Corps Members, allowing them to better manage their living expenses during their service year. It’s also expected to boost morale and encourage even greater dedication to national service.
