‘My performance puts Nigeria on a positive map’ – Kanu

by Oviri Kelvin, Sports Editor, Abuja

Super Falcons Uchenna Kanu says her performance in the Mexican Liga MX is modeling Nigeria in a positive light on the world map.

Kanu, who plays for UNAL Tigres in the Mexican Liga MX as the first Nigerian and African to feature in the South American league, appeals to fellow Africans to make a switch to the promising league.

The Super Falcon has been in top form for Tigres scoring double-digit goals with a capitulated hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Santos Laguna over the weekend.

Kanu, 2019 African Women Footballer of the year nominee, consented that the Mexican Liga MX is not in the same prime as Sweden and Spanish women’s leagues, but the inflow of international players will help to develop the league.

Following the above, the 24 years old striker who is playing in her debut season after the league rules were changed to enable international players to participate in the Mexican Liga MX, called on Africans to
explore the opportunity to grow the women’s league.

According to the Abia State-born striker who played domestic football in Delta Queens before going abroad, the fans, and the people of the city have been great, not just her teammates.

However, she attributed her development on the pitch to the competitive league of Sweden where ‘she made a huge breakthrough, scoring 22 goals in 42 games for Linkopings before making a big-money switch to Mexico’, CAFonline reported.

“I’m honoured, coming to Mexico has been great and the people here are nice, not just the teammates, not the club but the whole city, the fans,” she expressed.

“I’ve not seen fans like that of Tigres, I am thankful for the opportunity to represent Nigeria, my family, and myself here in Mexico.

“As the first Nigerian and African to play in Mexico is huge, a stepping stone and opening the door for other Nigerians and Africans to join. Just putting the name of Nigeria on the map positively, it’s been great
and I am grateful for the opportunity.

“Playing there [Sweden] prepared and inspired me really well physically, and mentally. I learned so much in Sweden. I think it’s stereotypical how people view Mexico, no one could really say what it is like there.

“Right here it’s totally different, the league is competitive, and the players are professional. I like it here. Being the first African and Nigerian to play here, I hope my former teammates and fellow Africans from back home can join the league and just help build and grow it more.

“I’m just focused on getting better, learning about cultures, the pattern played here, and making friends. It’s been great in Sweden, in Spain, and here now in Mexico and I’m prepared to keep going forward,” she added.

The UNAL Tigres sensational forward, who made her debut on January 10 against Necaxa, has scored doubles two times and a double hat-trick in the Mexican Liga MX to record her double-digit goals.
