Cross River Assembly suspends LG boss over alleged misuse of power

The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Theresa Ushie, for three months over alleged misuse of power and handling public funds inappropriately.

The suspension of the local government boss was revealed in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Matthew Okache.

The suspension follows local government laws, which allow such actions to be taken.

According to the statement, the assembly voted to have her step down for 90 days, while an independent investigation takes place to look into the allegations against her without any interference.

During her suspension, the Vice Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Egbung Odama, will take over as acting chairman.

Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, emphasized that the move is about promoting fairness, accountability, and good governance at the local level.

He also urged the committees responsible for legal matters and public concerns to start a thorough investigation and report back on their findings before the end of the suspension period.
