Army attributes Giwa barracks explosion to extreme heat in Borno
The Nigerian Army has attributed the explosion that occurred at Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri on Tuesday to the extreme heat currently gripping Borno State.

In a statement issued by the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI, the military confirmed that the blast originated from an ammunition storage facility within the barracks.

According to Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the unusually high temperatures triggered the accidental detonation of some munitions.

Emergency services, including the Borno State Fire Service and fire units from various security agencies, he said, responded promptly and managed to contain the situation.

Troops from Operation HADIN KAI have also been deployed around the area to maintain public safety and prevent opportunistic acts by criminal elements.

The Army called on residents to remain calm, urging the public to disregard any rumors suggesting the explosion was the result of an attack.

Authorities emphasized that the situation is under control and there is no threat to the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.
