WWE star John Cena announces retirement, cites age factor

John Cena has declared his retirement from WWE, attributing the decision to his age and admitting that he is “not as strong and fast” as he used to be.

The 48-year-old wrestler plans to conclude his illustrious career later this year, expressing a desire to step back from the sport before his physical abilities decline too much.

In an interview with People magazine, John stated, “Age is a factor. I’m not as strong or as fast as I once was.

“I made a promise when I started gaining some fame that I would step away when I became a step slower, because there will be young talents just as eager as I was who deserve a chance to prove themselves.”

The 17-time WWE world champion shared that he is now prioritizing time with his wife, Shay Shariatzadeh.

Cena remarked, “My health and my commitment to my partner are my top priorities right now, so every time I step into the ring, I want to ensure I can give it my all, but it’s time to move on.”

The wrestling icon underwent a hair transplant in November 2024 and expressed regret for not having the procedure done a decade earlier, as fans often commented on his thinning hair despite his efforts to hide it.

John recalled, “While I was trying to conceal my hair loss, the audience was bringing it to attention.

“I saw signs that said, ‘The bald John Cena.’ They encouraged me to explore my options. Now I have a routine that includes red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, shampoo, conditioner, and I also had a hair transplant last November.”

He added, “I dislike that if there wasn’t so much stigma around it, I would have done it ten years ago. I thought I was the only one, but seven or eight out of 10 men experience thinning or baldness.”

Cena admitted that he becomes quite “fired up” when discussing the hair transplant.
