Van Dijk signs new 2 years deal to stay at Liverpool, ends PSG transfer rumours

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has officially put pen to paper on a fresh two-year contract extension, committing his future to Anfield amid speculation of a potential move to Paris Saint-Germain. The Dutch defender, whose previous contract was set to expire at the end of the current season, has chosen loyalty over a lucrative exit, reinforcing his bond with the Merseyside club.

At 33, Van Dijk remains a defensive rock for Liverpool, having joined the club in January 2018 from Southampton for a record £75 million. Since then, he has played 314 matches and won every major club trophy, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and two EFL Cups. His leadership on and off the pitch earned him the captain’s armband in 2023 following Jordan Henderson’s departure.

Speaking after the announcement, Van Dijk expressed deep pride in extending his stay at the club he now considers home. “It was always Liverpool. That was my mindset. It was always part of my plan to stay, and it was always Liverpool,” he said. “Someone called me an adopted Scouser the other day, and it made me really proud. It’s a special feeling to continue this journey for another two years.”

This announcement follows the recent contract renewal of Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah, who also agreed to a two-year extension. With both senior players secured, new manager Arne Slot, also from the Netherlands, will now look to build a competitive squad around his experienced core in his debut season as Liverpool boss.

Van Dijk’s decision to stay comes just weeks after he admitted uncertainty about his future, telling reporters in March he had “no idea” if he would remain at Anfield. However, talks reportedly accelerated in recent weeks, and the deal was finalized earlier this week.
While fans celebrate Van Dijk and Salah’s renewed commitment, questions still linger over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future. The England international, who recently returned to training after a month-long injury layoff, has yet to extend his contract, which expires in July. Strong rumours continue to link him with a summer switch to Real Madrid, leaving Liverpool supporters on edge.
Van Dijk’s new contract not only strengthens Liverpool’s defensive stability but also sends a clear message of intent as the club chases a record-equalling 20th English league title. With leadership, loyalty, and legendary status already cemented, Van Dijk’s next chapter in red promises to be just as memorable as the last.
