Tension in Ogoni: Thousands gather in Bori over oil exploration resumption

A massive crowd of Ogoni leaders, elders, youth groups, and clergymen have stormed the Peace & Freedom Center in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, for a high-stakes meeting on the controversial resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland.

The gathering, which has drawn thousands of concerned citizens, includes some of the most influential voices in the region. Among the key figures already present are Ledum Mitee, former president of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP); Professor Roseline Konya, Chairperson of the Governing Council of Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori; the chairmen of all four Ogoni Local Government Areas; and Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represents Rivers South East in the Senate.

The presence of high-ranking clergymen, traditional rulers, youth leaders, and women’s groups further shows the gravity of the discussions, as Ogoni communities remain deeply divided on the issue of oil exploration.

Security has been tightened across the venue, with heavy deployments of police, army, and civil defense operatives to maintain order as tensions over the fate of Ogoniland’s oil-rich land continue to rise.
