Senate passes N124.2bn Police Trust Fund 2024 budget

The Senate has passed a budget of ₦124.2 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for the fiscal year 2024, an allocation aimed at bolstering law enforcement across the nation.

This decision was reached following an in-depth review and discussion led by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs during plenary on Wednesday.

Vice-Chairman of the committee, Senator Yunus Akintunde, detailed that the budget encompasses vital expenses to support the police, which include ₦1.2 billion earmarked specifically for employee salaries, ensuring that law enforcement personnel receive timely compensation for their dedicated service.

Additionally, ₦98.6 billion has been allocated for various critical projects intended to modernize the police infrastructure.

The primary objectives of the budget are to enhance police training programmes, which are essential for skill development and effective law enforcement practices, and to repair, as well as construct, police stations strategically located throughout the country.

The funding will also facilitate the renovation of police barracks and clinics, improving living conditions and health services for officers.

The budget includes provisions for the acquisition of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and other necessary logistical items to support operational efficiency.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed optimism that the allocation will significantly improve the country’s security landscape.

He underscored the necessity of rigorous oversight to ensure that every naira allocated is utilized effectively and transparently, ultimately benefiting both the police force and the nation at large.
