Sapele port will soon become active again, Rep. Etanabene assures

The member representing Sapele, Okpe, and Uvwie Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Benedict Etanabene, has assured that the Sapele port will soon become active again.

Speaking to journalists in Sapele, Delta State, after inspecting the port, Rep. Etanabene stated that strategic engagements with key stakeholders, particularly the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), have brought the revitalisation of the port to an advanced stage.

“We are getting very close to the revitalisation of the Sapele port,” the lawmaker assured. “We’ve had detailed discussions, and the issues have been clearly outlined. What remains now is execution.”

Rep. Etanabene disclosed that a recent meeting with the managing director of the NPA was particularly productive, as both parties identified the root challenges that have hindered operations at the port over the years.

Among the issues discussed was a crucial technical maritime process known as sea breaking.

He explained that this process, which previously took place at Escravos is essential for improving the navigability of waterways and ensuring that vessels can access the Sapele port without hindrance.

The lawmaker emphasised that this procedure will be a central component of the recommendations to be presented to the federal government.

“In a short while, not just Sapele, but also Koko and Warri ports will witness a turnaround,” Rep. Etanabene said, expressing confidence in the federal government’s commitment to revitalising the nation’s maritime infrastructure and economy.

He further reiterated his commitment to advance legislative support and lobbying for appropriate budgetary allocations to ensure the success of the port revival.

The House member noted that reopening the Sapele, Koko, and Warri ports will provide a significant boost to economic activities across Delta State and the wider Niger Delta region.

He urged residents and stakeholders to remain hopeful and united, assuring that with sustained collaboration and strong political will, the long-abandoned ports in the region will soon roar back to life.
