S/Eagles defender Balogun bids farewell to Rangers

Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has declared his exit from Scottish Premiership powerhouse Rangers, marking the conclusion of an incredible era at Ibrox.

The 36-year-old turned to social media to deliver an emotional goodbye message to fans, indicating that he will not be returning to the Light Blues for the 2025–2026 campaign.

Balogun made his return to Rangers for a second term in July 2023 as a free agent, originally committing to a one-year contract that was later extended for another year.

His comeback provided essential experience and guidance to the defense, culminating in a triumph in the Scottish League Cup in December 2023, where Rangers overcame Aberdeen in the final.

The Nigerian international had previously enjoyed a remarkable period at Ibrox from 2020 to 2022.

During that time, he played a critical role in securing Rangers’ historic 55th league title in 2021, their Scottish Cup victory in 2022, and making an impressive run to the UEFA Europa League final in the same year.

Across both terms at the club, Balogun accumulated 114 appearances, contributing three goals and four assists while establishing a reputation as a reliable presence in defense.

Even though he participated in the Rangers’ last three home games of the 2024–25 season, the seasoned defender did not have the chance to properly bid farewell to the supporters.

Reflecting on his departure, Balogun shared his disappointment over the absence of a fitting send-off.

“If I had known that the last two matches of the season were my final ones for the club, I would have ensured my farewells were made accordingly.

“Sadly, I was not given that chance, and it saddens me as I would have loved to walk around Ibrox one last time and reciprocate all the love and support you provided me during my two periods here.

“I cannot predict when I might return, but I assure you that I won’t vanish. Thank you for making me feel welcomed and valued wherever our paths crossed,” he said.

Balogun’s professional career features an impressive roster of clubs throughout Europe, including Queens Park Rangers, Brighton & Hove Albion, Hannover 96, Werder Bremen, Fortuna Düsseldorf, and Mainz 05.
