Middlesbrough has officially appointed Rob Edwards as their new head coach, signing him to a three-year agreement.
Edwards led Luton Town to the Premier League in 2023 but faced relegation during their first season back in the top division.
He left Luton in January while the team was in 20th place in the Championship.
At 42 years old, Edwards takes over from Michael Carrick, who left the Riverside Stadium earlier this summer after nearly three years in charge.
Reports suggest that Edwards turned down offers from other clubs, including Bristol City.
In a statement on the club’s website on Tuesday, Edwards expressed his excitement: “It’s a true honor to be given the chance to be head coach of this remarkable football club.
“I fully understand the significance of this role and what it means to the community. The fanbase is incredible.
“I felt immediately that this was the right fit for me, and it truly excited me. If I was going to return to coaching, I wanted to do so at a place where we had a real opportunity, and I believe we have that here.

Kieran Scott, Middlesbrough’s head of football, commented: “Rob is someone I have been aware of for a long time, and I have closely followed his growth as a coach.
“He made history at Forest Green Rovers, and winning promotion to the Premier League with Luton Town was a remarkable accomplishment.
“We had a strong pool of candidates for this position, but we felt Rob stood out. We were very impressed when we met him and heard about his vision for the club.
“We’re thrilled that Rob has agreed to join us and look forward to what the future holds.”
