Road crash on Zaria-Kano Highway claims 21 lives

No fewer than 21 people have lost their lives in a fatal road crash that occurred at Kasuwar Dogo in Dakatsalle, along the Zaria–Kano Highway.

Spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano State Sector Command, Abdullahi Labaran, in a statement noted that the crash occurred on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at about 8:23 am.

He said the crash involved two vehicles, a DAF trailer with registration number GWL 422 ZE, and a Toyota Hummer bus with registration number KMC 171 YM.

According to him, preliminary investigation conducted by the FRSC rescue team, revealed that the crash was caused by route violation by the driver of the Toyota Hummer bus, which led to a head-on collision with the trailer.

The impact of the collision resulted in a fire outbreak that engulfed the two vehicles.

“Upon receiving the crash report, the Sector Commander, Corps Commander M. B. Bature, immediately contacted the federal and state fire services to assist in extinguishing the fire, while the FRSC rescue team proceeded to the scene for rescue and evacuation operations.

“A total of 24 people were involved in the crash; 21 persons lost their lives, three others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“The burnt bodies of the deceased were evacuated and deposited at Nassarawa Hospital Mortuary, Kano, while the injured victims were taken to Garun Malam General Hospital for medical attention.

“The road obstruction caused by the accident was successfully cleared by FRSC Rs1.2 Kano tow truck operatives in collaboration with the police, and normal traffic flow has since been restored,” he stated.

Labaran further quoted the sector commander, to have expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and called on all road users to strictly obey traffic rules, particularly avoiding dangerous overtaking, route violations, and night travels, adding that, the corps remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users.
