Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has urged his previous team to acquire Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen from Napoli instead of Victor Gyokeres from Sporting CP as they seek a reliable forward this summer.
In a conversation with journalists, Ferdinand stressed the importance of acquiring an experienced goal scorer to remedy United’s attacking issues following a disappointing 2024/25 Premier League season, during which the team netted merely 44 goals, ranking as the fifth-lowest in the league.
He pointed out the challenges faced by current attackers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, who scored just four and three goals in the league, respectively.
“I believe Hojlund’s inexperience has played a significant role,” Ferdinand mentioned, highlighting the necessity for a skilled number nine who can guide both Hojlund, Zirkzee, and Chido Obi.
While Gyokeres, who found the net 39 times in Portugal’s Primeira Liga, remains a prime target, Ferdinand thinks the 26-year-old Osimhen is a more suitable choice due to his proven success in various leagues and on the international stage.

“If I’m evaluating the options available and had to choose between him and Osimhen, I’d likely opt for Osimhen because of his experience,” Ferdinand expressed.
“He has demonstrated his abilities in different leagues and also on the international front. I view him as an elite number nine from whom younger colleagues can gain knowledge.”
Osimhen, currently discontent at Napoli, recently turned down a £63 million offer from Al-Hilal, indicating his preference for a switch to the Premier League.
Nevertheless, United will have to contend with Chelsea and Juventus, along with Napoli’s steep demands that could hinder discussions.
With manager Ruben Amorim managing a squad revamp, including the recent acquisition of Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million, Osimhen’s experience could be crucial for United’s aspirations to reclaim a top-four position in the Premier League.
