Police arrest 2 for allegedly dehumanizing teenage girls in viral video

The Ebonyi State Police Command has paraded two suspects, Dennis Ali and Ituma Sunday, in connection with a viral video showing two teenage girls being subjected to brutal treatment, including stripping, flogging, and other forms of dehumanization.

According to a statement issued Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, the incident, which took place in November 2023 in Ojiegbe Ngbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area, came to light after the video surfaced online, sparking public outrage. The footage, circulated widely over the weekend, prompted swift action by the State Police Commissioner, CP Anthonia Uche-Anya, leading to the suspects’ arrest.

The teenage victims, aged 15 and 16, endured severe mistreatment that is deemed illegal under Nigerian law. DSP Ukandu emphasized that any criminal accusations must be reported to the police rather than resorting to unlawful punishment. “The law stipulates clear penalties for criminal behavior, and justice should not be administered through violent or dehumanizing methods,” he said.

Upon assuming office, CP Uche-Anya reiterated her commitment to eradicating “trial by ordeal, jungle justice, and self-help” in Ebonyi State. She assured that those involved in this heinous act would face the full weight of the law, with the support of local stakeholders, to prevent such abuses from recurring.
