The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the South-South Development Commission (SSDC) Bill into law, a move expected to drive economic and infrastructural growth in the oil-rich region.

In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, OON, PANDEF described the presidential assent as a historic milestone that strengthens the Niger Delta’s confidence in the Tinubu administration’s commitment to regional development. Igali emphasized that the newly established commission will tackle pressing social, environmental, and economic challenges unique to the South-South.

PANDEF also commended the National Assembly for the swift passage of the bill, noting that its implementation will accelerate much-needed development in the region. The group expressed gratitude on behalf of Niger Delta ethnic nationalities, highlighting that the SSDC will complement the efforts of South-South governors in delivering sustainable progress.

“This singular action has reinforced our people’s faith in the Federal Government’s resolve to promote even development across Nigeria while addressing the long-standing issues confronting our region,” the statement read.

PANDEF urged President Tinubu to ensure that the leadership of the commission comprises competent individuals with proven expertise, capable of driving meaningful transformation. The group further called for urgent federal intervention in environmental remediation, citing the devastating impact of oil exploration on local communities.

Additionally, PANDEF appealed to the President to reconsider the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State Assembly. The group stressed that restoring democratic governance in Rivers State remains a priority, given the nationwide outcry over the political crisis.
