The Nigeria Police Force has addressed the widespread allegations regarding the arrest and detention of activist Omoyele Sowore, labeling them as “falsehoods and disinformation” intended to tarnish the reputation of state institutions and the office of the Inspector-General of Police.
In a press release dated August 8, 2025, with reference number CZ.5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.6/483, the Force stated that Sowore was apprehended due to “credible, corroborated allegations” related to criminal activities, including forgery and cyberstalking, which are currently under investigation.
Police spokesperson DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed that Sowore was granted bail within the constitutionally mandated 48 hours, as stipulated by Section 35(4) of the amended 1999 Constitution, and is expected to appear in court shortly to face the charges.

In response to circulating images of Sowore with a bandaged arm, the Force rejected allegations of torture, asserting that the bandage was part of his personal items prior to his arrest.
The statement indicated that the Inspector-General of Police has initiated an internal investigation to ascertain how the bandage came to be during his detention, noting that Sowore declined medical examinations by independent police medical teams on August 7 and 8.
The Police further clarified that his detention was authorized by a valid court order, emphasizing that all actions taken were lawful and free from political bias. The statement urged the public and media to refrain from sensationalism and to practice responsible reporting.
“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its dedication to human rights, the rule of law, and justice without bias. No one is above the law,” the statement concluded.
