Zambia secure FIFA Women’s World Cup ticket

Zambia women’s national team secured the FIFA Women’s World Cup ticket to Australia and New Zealand after they edged out West African side Senegal in the quarter-final through penalty shootouts at the Complexe Sportif Mohamed V in Casablanca.

The Copper Queens also from the 4-2 penalty victory against Senegal after both teams played a one-all stalemate at extra time, booked their first WAFCON semi-final place in history.

Senegal opened the scoresheet through Nguenar Ndiaye after both teams played a goalless first-half draw but the South African side responded 20 minutes to the ninety through Avell Chitundu’s close-range strike to level the scoreline.

However, the inability of both sides to find the back of the net in the course of processing the extra time, forced the game into a first WAFCON quarter-final penalty shootouts where Teranga Lionesses lost 4-2 to book a ticket back to Dakar.

“Zambia demonstrated their desire to win the match as coach Bruce Mwape made no changes to the impressive starting team that beat Togo in the last group game four days ago,” CAF reported in a statement.

“Senegal gaffer Mame Moussa Cissé made a couple of changes to the team that lost narrowly to host country Morocco in their last group game.

“Mareme Babou, Anta Dembele, Ndeye Awa Diakhate and Nguenar Ndiaye were brought into the starting list for the Teranga Lionesses,” CAF statement noted.

Consequent to the shootout, Siomala Mapepa, Misozi Zulu, Ireen Lungu and goalkeeper Hazel Natasha Nali scored for Zambia while Teranga Lionesses’ Mama Diop, Haby Baldé were the only players that scored for Senegal.
