EEDC holds fire drill, safety awareness for its staff

In keeping with its continuous safety awareness programmes, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), has subjected its workforce to a Fire Drill, as part of its way of inculcating safety consciousness and firefighting techniques among its employees.

The exercise, which is held periodically, took place at the company’s corporate headquarters in Enugu, on Thursday, and was organized by the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) department, in conjunction with the Enugu State Fire Service.

At the session, there were teachings on fire prevention tips, classes on fire and the various firefighting equipment, with practical demonstrations on how they are used.

The Head of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), EEDC, Engr. Dr Francis Iwu reiterated the company’s commitment to safety and charged every staff of the organization to always be safety conscious and vigilant about happenings around them, both at home and at the workplace.

He further advised them to always converge at the Muster Point anytime the fire alarm is activated, and to always use the stairs and emergency exit routes while evacuating the building, instead of the elevator.

The Chief Fire Officer, Enugu State, Engr. Okwudiri Ohaa, who was on ground with his team for the exercise commended the Management of EEDC for its unwavering commitment to issues of safety and its standards.

“During our assessment of EEDC facilities, we are excited to note that all the required fire safety equipments are in place, and I must commend the Management for this act, Ohaa said.

Ohaa stressed on the importance of periodic fire drill, saying that fire may occur any day and at any time, either in our homes or offices and that the training is necessary so that we are better prepared and equipped with the right knowledge to fight and manage fire when it occurs.

The Managing Director/CEO, EEDC, Praveen Chorghade, Chief Operating Officer, Maruthi Kumar, Group Head, Human Resources, Uday Mishra, were among the top management staff present at the drill, along with Heads of departments and staff across all cadres.
