United thrash Arsenal 2-0 in New Jersey

By Oviri Kelvin, Abuja

Manchester United began their summer tour of the United States with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at MetLife Stadium.

Bruno Fernandes, who was recently named United’s permanent captain, scored a goal in the first half, followed shortly after by another goal from Jadon Sancho, who played as the No. 9 in Erik ten Hag’s system.

Tom Heaton started in goal, as new signing André Onana is still working on his fitness after moving from Inter. Heaton made an impressive double save against Gabriel Martinelli.

Mason Mount started the game in front of a sold-out crowd of 82,262, which was the highest attendance for a soccer match in New Jersey. Declan Rice, Jurriën Timber, and Kai Havertz were also included in Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s strong lineup.

Arteta will be disappointed with the mistakes that led to both of United’s first-half goals, with errors from Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel.

Ramsdale should have saved Fernandes’ long-range shot, while Gabriel allowed Sancho to sneak in and score a goal from a tight angle.

The only negative for Ten Hag was an injury to Amad Diallo. The winger from Ivory Coast, who had an impressive loan spell at Sunderland last season, came on at half-time but had to be substituted shortly after with Facundo Pellistri.

Despite the result, there was a penalty shootout after the game, as both managers agreed before the match to practice penalties in front of a large crowd.

United emerged victorious in the shootout, winning 5-3 with successful penalties from Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelöf, Marcus Rashford, and Christian Eriksen. Fabio Vieira missed the decisive penalty for Arsenal.
