The Edo State Cricket Association has sponsored ten Nigerian teenage cricketers to Elton Chigumbura Cricket academy in Zimbabwe to prepare them ahead of the September African qualifiers in Botswana, a pathway to the International Cricket Council (ICC) U19 World Cup. The Trumpet Gathered
According to the Public Relations of Officer of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Musa Ehizoje Bodie, the ten cricketers comprising five boys and five girls were selected for one-month intensive training in a bid to leverage new skills to propel the nation through the qualifying phase to the ICC U19 World Cup in January next year.
While the maiden edition of the ICC U19 Girls World Cup takes place next year’s January in South Africa, the 15th edition of the Boys U19 version is scheduled for 2024.
Recall that last month, three cricketers who were sent to South Africa for high-performance training in Hollywood Dolphins Academy in Durban by the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) returned to the shores of the country.
According to the federation, Sasan Adedeji, Sylvester and Isaac Okpe, during the one-month training programme, were ‘introduced to new technology and skill enhancement programs in batting, bowling and fielding’.

Among the cricketers, Edo State Cricket Association sponsored are Prosper Useni, Selim Salau, David AbiebhodePam Pam and Solomon Chilemanya in the male category while Piety Lucky, Oseyande Omonkhobhio, Peculiar Agbonya, Victory Igbinedion and Divine Uranta were selected in the female category.
Two coaches, Esewi Kingsley Guobadia and Azuka Onwujobi were also assigned to accompany the players.
This development is in furtherance of the NCF commitment in the last three years to fashion out pathways to bolster the national team in all categories and levels.
