City, Madrid to swoop on Reece James

Premier League champions Manchester City and Spanish League champions Madrid are eyeing a move to swoop in for Chelsea defender, Reece James.

James, who has established himself in the Blues’ starting lineup, displacing captain César Azpilicueta in the defensive right-back position, is yet to meet with Chelsea’s board for a new contract.

Probably, the delay could be because Chelsea is under new management after Roman Abramovich sold the club to a Todd Boely-led consortium following the military invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

However, during the period the Russian billionaire was sanctioned by the UK government, including Chelsea, all contract talks with the club’s players were stalled resulting in Antonio Rudiger making a switch to Real Madrid.

James, 22, is a key figure in Thomas Tuchel’s plans for next season and has a contract with the club until 2025 but the failure on the part of the Chelsea to renew the fleet-footed defender’s contract may likely trigger a move to the Spanish capital.

Following this development, the Mirror reported that Real Madrid boss, Carlo Ancelotti, is eager to bring the player to Madrid having been impressed with the player’s performance on nine occasions he has watched him in action.

Furthermore, the Mirror added that the Spanish giants’ interest in James is spurred by the emerging uncertainties in their defensive lineup with ageing Dani Carvajal, who is experiencing lapses possibly created by is degenerated form.
