Agriculture remains highest employer of labour in Africa, says Elumelu

Chairman of Heirs Holding, Tony Elumelu, has said at the World Economic Forum (WEF) that agriculture remains the highest employer of labour on the African continent.
He made this known during PepsiCo’s Global Leaders roundtable on mobilising climate finance for regenerative agriculture, stressing: “In the wake of the food security crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, I championed Africa’s ability to feed the world.”
Elumelu, who also pointed out that the continent has abundance of arable land, maintained that African leaders and all stakeholders need to fix commodity exchanges, and deal with issues of processing agricultural produce, transportation, storage and access to stable electricity.

“We must work hard to incentivise our farmers. We must support farmers for our progress in the agriculture sector. We must support our farmers to see progress in the sector and create an export and tariff regime that works,” he added.
He further stressed that there was a great need to mechanise and leverage technology to harness the full potential in agriculture for the benefit of humanity.
