WAFCON: CAF announces 150% increment in prize money

Confederations of African Football (CAF) have announced an increment of 150% in the prize monies of this year’s Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) taking place in Morocco.

CAF said the decision was in line with its new policy to make women’s football in the continent competitive.

In a statement by CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, on Saturday, he noted that the overall prize money in the 2022 TotalEnergies (WAFCON) event has increased from $975,000 to $2,400,000.

According to Motsepe, the continental football governing body has identified women’s football as one of its top priorities and will ensure they continue to add value to the women’s football events. The Trumpet Gathered

He said, “The winner of this year’s edition of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2022 will pocket USD 500 000 – a 150% increase of USD 300 000. Previous winners of this competition received USD 200 000.

“The prize money for runners-up has almost doubled from USD 175 000 to USD 300 000 and the semi-finalists will get USD 225 000 each which has increased from USD 125 000,” CAF President added.

The 2022 edition of WAFCON has taken off on a good note with host nation Morocco starting on a winning note against Burkina Faso at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat, to record the first victory in the 2022 edition, while Senegal walloped Uganda 2-0 on Sunday in their opening game.
