Resurgent Super Falcons held to a 2-2 draw in friendlies

The Super Falcons of Nigeria were yesterday held to a late 2-2 draw by Canada in Starlight Stadium at Langford.

The clash is the second leg of the friendlies between the African champions and the Olympic champions played in front of 5,434 spectators.

As an act of revenge against the Canadian female team, who won the first leg tie on Friday, the Super Falcons wasted no time in opening the scoring chart 5 minutes after kickoff through Ifeoma Onumonu’s goal.

The Trumpet reports that the Super Falcons battled to double the lead in the first half, making several attempts at goal but were curtailed by the North Americans who struggled to parry the Nigerian ladies’ attacks in a 1-0 first half.

Early into the second half, Canada responded in 4 minutes through Margaret Sinclair to tally the scoreline but Nigeria regained the lead 4 minutes later after Rasheedat Ajibade scored for the Super Falcons to make it 2-1.

However, the Super Falcons, expecting a victorious celebration at the end of the match, fell to a late spoil 2 minutes before additional time as Shelina Zadorsky’s header mercifully helped Canada earn a 2-2 draw.

In the course of the match, Coach Randy Waldrum made several tactical substitutions, bringing in Peace Efih for Rita Chikwelu in the 75th minute, and Nicole Payne for Michelle Alozie in the 84th minute, and Glory Ogbonna for Francisca Ordega in the 90th minute.
