PDP primaries: I did not betray Saraki – Senator Dino Melaye
By Gabriel Elozino
Senator Dino Melaye has said he still maintains a former President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki despite his support for Atiku Abubakar at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primaries.
Senator Melaye was the chief agent of the former Vice President, Atiku, who eventually won the elections. According to Melaye, who spoke as a guest at a TVC popular programme, Journalists Hangout, his relationship with his former colleague and boss at the Senate has not been soured by his action, pointing out that he only did what was logically right at the moment.
He said, “I supported Atiku because I believe he is our best option at the moment. This is a man who already has 11 million votes standing. Why should we leave someone who has 11 million votes in the waiting to experiment with someone who has not won 1 million votes”.
He claimed the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the PDP has no ethnic undertone behind it. He said that his emergence was the best move for the PDP to win the 2023 general elections.

Asked whether the late hour stepping down of Sokoto governor, Aminu Tambuwal for Atiku was a pre-planned northern agenda, he said, “there is nothing ethnic about it. I was Atiku’s agent at that election and I know how the people voted. Kaduna and Katsina delegates voted for Wike, while Delta delegates voted for Atiku, so what is ethnic in that.”
Speaking further, Senator Melaye boasted that PDP presidential candidate will defeat any candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that will emerge. The APC is billed for a make or mar presidential primaries on the 6th and 7th of June, 2022.
