Pastor Tunde Bakare, Senior Pastor of The Citadel Global Community Church, Lagos, after declaring his interest in the 2023 presidential race about two weeks ago, has resigned from pastoral duties in pursuit of his presidential ambition.
Bakare whose presidential bid is tagged ‘Project 16’ while declaring his desire to serve as the 16th president of Nigeria in 2023, on the 9th of April, 2022, declared his intention to enter the presidential race under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The 67-year-old televangelist while delivering his valedictory speech at the end of the church service on Sunday, announced his decision to step down from active ministry in pursuit of his presidential ambition.
His statement to an audience of Nigerians in Diaspora at a virtual gathering reads thus: “Project 16 is not just about me. It’s not just about the presidential ambition of any man. In any case, I do not have a self-generated ambition. What I do have is a vision of a new Nigeria that was birthed in me from childhood and an honest aspiration to serve as the 16th president of my beloved nation, Nigeria,”.

The clergy had earlier stated that he is the next president of Nigeria after Muhammadu Buhari. Recall, in 2011, he was the running mate to Muhammadu Buhari who was defeated by Goodluck Jonathan at the polls before defeating the latter in 2015 to become the 15th president of Nigeria.
The clergy’s desire to run under the APC means he will be pitched against APC bigwigs who had declared their intention for the office of the president in 2023, which include the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; former Abia State governor, Orji Uzor Kalu; former Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha; minister of transportation, Rotimi Ameachi, Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi etc.
