Outrage greets reopening of Lekki-Ikoyi bridge toll plaza

By BENJAMIN OMOIKE

Nigerians have condemned the decision of the Lagos State Government to reopen the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Plaza. Recall that operations at Lekki tollgate were suspended after the #EndSARS chaos (where many were alleged killed), during the #EndSARS protest on October 20, 2020, which led to the facility being burnt down.

While a move to reopen the facility met objections in some quarters in 2021, Yomi Omomuwasan, LCC’s Managing Director, has announced that toll services at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Plaza will resume in April Omomuwasan said the decision was taken after extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including the residents’ associations, traditional rulers and community leaders, professional bodies, as well as the Lagos State Government.

However, Nigerians on social media have described the reopening as a sign of desperation from the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and and National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, ahead of the 2023 election. Here are some of the reactions: Princewill – ‘Protest will soon begin’ The Lone Ranger – ‘So those who died that day died for nothing, The Trumpet gathered.

What type of banana republic is this? They just keep on taxing and stealing from the Nigerian people for no reason.’ Madrid Spain –’With cost of living and fuel scarcity in Nigeria, introducing this now will increase more sufferings to all. Rice also cry remember.
