FG’s committed to tackle insecurity – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has reiterated the federal government’s commitment to tackling insecurity and bringing lasting peace to areas affected by the setback across the country.

Osinbajo, who stated this yesterday at the palace of the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, assured that with the measures put in place by the government, Nigerians would soon begin to see “significant changes” security-wise.

He was in Katsina state to commiserate with business mogul, Alhaji Dahiru Mangal, over the death of his mother, Gajiya Murja, who died last week, as well as the murder of state’s Commissioner for Science and Technology, Rabe Nasir.

The vice president also visited the mother of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Hajiy Dada, where he wished her long life and good health.

He said it was due to the government’s commitment that bandits were recently classified as terrorists, as such would enable security to take stringent actions against them.

Speaking, he said, “I have not been here in the palace for a while and I am happy that the security situation is improving, the governor has informed me about it.

“The President has decided to meet with all the top security experts and change where necessary to ensure that there is adequate security all over the country.

“I am sure that your royal highness will remember that only recently, the president has ordered that bandits should be classified as terrorists.

“This is to enable security agencies to take more stringent actions against them.

“So, we expect to see significant changes and by the grace of God, peace will return quickly to all villages and communities not only in Katsina state but also across the country.

“With all the measures and orders put in place by the federal government, significant changes will soon be experienced in the country,” he added.

Responding, the Emir of Katsina commended the federal government’s as well as Governor Aminu Masari’s efforts in tackling terrorism in the state.

He also commended the vice president for the visit which he described as historic.

“Your coming here for the first time since when you were campaigning is highly historic for us.

“You are now home and you have talked on security issues which is indeed our major concern.

“I have just come back from Kaduna only to be surprised to receive over 100 telephone calls on planned terrorist attacks which is the order of the day.

“I in-person, including the state governor, don’t have any time to sleep with two eyes closed, but I am highly grateful that these criminals have been classified as terrorists.”

He said though the scale of attacks by terrorists had declined considerably in the state, there were still pockets of attacks that should be decisively dealt with.

He, therefore, pleaded for more efforts in making the state crime-free and peaceful, assuring his emirate’s support to security operatives.
