Only Deserving Persons are Given Traditional Titles in Daura – Emir

James Danjuma, Katsina

Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar has dismissed insinuations that the Daura Emirate Council confers traditional titles on money bags and prominent politicians within and outside the country.

Speaking during turbaning of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi as the Dan Amanar Daura (Trusted Son of Daura), Farouk said the emirate doesn’t collect a dime from anyone before conferring traditional titles.

Amaechi was conferred with the title alongside a business mogul, Alhaji Nasiru Haladu, who was conferred with the title of Tafida Babba Daura.

The event which held at the palace premises of the emir in the ancient city of Daura, Katsina state, saw several prominent personalities in attendance.

According to the emir, only deserving persons that have proven their worth, whether they be black or white, rich or poor, are given traditional titles by the emirate.

He added that anyone that gives his time and resources to helping the poor, including persons who contribute to the development of Daura emirate, are considered for traditional titles.

He said Amaechi’s conferment was deserving due to his efforts at locating some federal and non-federal projects in Daura.

The traditional ruler identified some of the projects to include the University of Transportation, Federal Polytechnic, and the Kano to Niger rail line which will pass through Daura.

Speaking, the emir said, “This emirate has been conferring traditional titles for those deserving in the north and south part of the country.

“I want to assure you that we confer such titles not because of position or money, but because those so conferred are deserving.

“The emirate has never given anyone any title because of money or position, but because such person deserves such honour.

“We honour those that use their wealth and position to help the poor and down trodden; those are the kind of people that we confer with traditional titles.

“Anyone that shows love for the people of Daura, whether he is back or white, would be given such honour by the emirate.”

He added that the title conferred on Amaechi was the “emirate’s way of reciprocating the kind gesture to the people of Daura”, including the University of transportation which is to be completed before the end of the current federal government’s administration.
