Delta police arrest suspected armed robbers, recover guns

The Delta State Police Command has arrested some suspected armed robbers and cultists in a bid to end insecurity across the state.

In a statement made available to The Trumpet on Monday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Edafe Bright, the police said two rifles, two cut to size guns and cartridges were recovered from the suspects.

Bright stated that one Ekene Okonji, who has been terrorizing Ibusa community was arrested on Friday while two other suspects were arrested during a raid in Ugboren Community on Saturday.

He further stated that six other suspected cultists were arrested in Okpanam along Asaba – Benin Expressway on Saturday.

Bright said, “On 27/5/2022, at about 1800hrs, Anti-Crime Patrol team attached to Ibusa Division while on routine patrol in conjunction with Ibusa Anti-Cult volunteers, arrested one Ekene Okonji ‘m’ a.k.a. ‘galaxy’ a notorious criminal known for terrorizing Ibusa Community and its environs. Upon searching the suspect, one locally made cut-to-size short gun, seven live cartridges were recovered. The suspect is currently in custody and investigation is ongoing.

“Sequel to the restiveness in the oil producing Ugboren Community of Sapele Local Government Area, Delta State, over leadership tussle, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Muhammed Ali FCIA, PSC+ directed the DPO Sapele Division to carry out intensive raid in the Community and ensure that sanity is restored.

“Consequently, on 28/5/2022 at about 1330hrs, combined teams of Policemen attached to Sapele Division and men of the Nigerian army attached to 91 battalion carried out intensive raid in the community, including their community shrine. During the raid, Two FNC assault Rifles were recovered and two suspects arrested. Measures have been put in place to forestall any further breakdown of law and order.

“On 28/05/2022 at about 1130hrs, the Command Raiders Operatives while on investigation activities along Asaba – Benin Expressway in Okpanam, intercepted some hoodlums suspected to be cultists. The suspects on sighting the team took to their heels but the team chased them and in the process arrested Six of the suspects namely; Sunday Okafor Destiny, Stephen Osamota Pius and four others. One locally made cut-to-size double barrel gun, six expended cartridges and one 9mm live ammunition were recovered. Investigation is ongoing.”
