NLC declares nationwide protest in solidarity with ASUU

A two-day (26-27 July 2022) nationwide protest has been declared by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in support of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

This was disclosed in a circular signed by the NLC’s National President Ayuba Wabba and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja.

The memo was issued to all the NLC’s state chairme and secretaries, directing them to mobilise members for this very important protest for good governance. The Trumpet Gathered

The planned protest is aimed at pressurizing the Federal Government to conclude negotiations with the striking unions and ensure that public universities resume for normal activities.

The Congress stated that the protest will be held in all states and the Federal Capital Territory.

It noted that in line with the decisions of the National Executive Council meeting of the NLC held on June 30, 2022, the Congress has scheduled the National Days of Protest to get our children back to school and support our unions in Nigeria’s public universities fighting for quality education.

The circular disclosed that the nationwide-get- -our-children-back-to-school protests take-off points are the NLC State Secretariats and the Labour House, Abuja.

The university-based unions on strike include ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU).

ASUU has been on strike since Monday, February 14, 2022. over the failure of the Federal Government to reach an agreement with it.

ASUU is demanding the adoption of University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a payment mode after faulting the inconsistencies in government’s own Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), revitalization of public universities and renegotiation of 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement among others.
