How absence of mass transit caused proliferation of tricycles in Kano

“The absence of efficient mass transit has given rise to the proliferation of Tricycles as the main public transport vehicle in metropolitan Kano.”

These were the words of governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State while officially flagging -off the Kano city mass transit scheme yesterday in the state.

The governor was observed to have commissioned 100 buses and 50 taxis, at the ceremony which heralded the presence of captains of industries and top government functionaries.

The mass transit project, according to him, was aimed at addressing transportation challenges along the Jogana, Yankura to Janguza corridor.

The 100 buses and 50 cars painted with green and a stripe of white, he said, are to commence operation immediately.

Ganduje, said the construction and extension of many roads, flyovers and underpasses and many other infrastructures are considered necessary for the commercially viable and industrious city.

“To ensure effective and sustainable benefits of the investment and functional transport infrastructure need to be provided for an efficient Mass transit system that will fit into the new prolific city like Kano.

As a consequence of this scenario, traffic congestion, as made known by him, has reached a critical level while the security of lives is becoming a great source of concern.”
