Edo updates digital database of students, advances on new education policy

Edo State Government is updating a digital database of all students in the state to facilitate planning and budgeting for the education sector in line with the government’s efforts to sustain the progress recorded in the sector over the past five years.

The Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe, who disclosed this to journalists in Benin City, said the ministry has already captured over 45,000 biometric data of secondary school students in private and public schools across the state. The Trumpet Gathered

She noted that the data will enable the ministry to capture the number of secondary school students, teachers and learners in the state to help the government effectively plan and implement policies and programmes to sustain the success recorded in the education sector.

Oviawe said, “We have also started gathering the biometrics of secondary school students and have captured 45,000 SSS3 students from both public and private schools across the state. We plan to capture all students in our schools from kindergarten to tertiary level both in private and public institutions.

“We are working to ensure we have electronic data of learners in our ecosystem and using technology to access their records from one grade level to another.”

On the state’s new education policy, the commissioner stated, “A draft of the education policy is ready even as the ministry continues with town hall meetings in Edo North and Edo Central. All the seven local government areas in Edo South Senatorial District have been visited.

“The Ministry is also looking at disarticulation policy in the state following the 2004 UBEC Act. We are looking at the disarticulation of junior secondary schools from the senior secondary schools.”
